We Are All Philanthropists

This month, we're expanding the meaning of giving. Of course, money matters. It helps us sustain and build.

But generosity has never been only about money. In fact, philanthropy literally means love of humankind. And that love also shows up through time, creativity, prayer, care, and so much more.

Last month, one of our Hey Auntie! members, (Hey Cynthia), shared with me an opportunity to attend the Community Investment Network conference on philanthropy in Black communities.

Something the convener said has been echoing in my mind ever since:

……

We are all philanthropists; we just call it community.

……..

This truth has become the heartbeat of this month. Because we don't need a foundation to be the foundation. Our care, creativity, and connection are what hold our communities together.

So this November, we're practicing giving that restores and sustains.

Take a deep breath.

Now take another one.

Notice all you've held this year—your people, your peace, your humor, your hope.

If your capacity has changed, that's okay. Generosity can, too.

Ask yourself: What does generosity look like for me right now?

For some, it's financial.
For others, it's time, attention, or rest.
Every form of giving counts.

Because generosity isn't just what we give — it's how we live.

And just as a gentle reminder, your very presence is generosity.

Your care ripples, touching spaces you may never even see.

You are the gift, and every community you're part of, including ours, is better because of it.
