The Power of Gratitude

As we enter the month of Thanksgiving, may I ask you a question?

With a grace-filled score of 1 – 10, how would you score yourself in living a life of gratitude?

I've been thinking a lot about this over the last week. While I am getting better, I realize my score will probably fluctuate a bit. Sometimes, it's easier to be grateful when everything is going well and more challenging when things are not.

However, after reflecting on our conversation with Latoya Cooper last week at Auntie's Porch, I am reminded and encouraged that our circumstances do not have to change how we experience gratitude. Our gratitude can change how we experience a circumstance.

Latoya delivered a master class on practicing gratitude. She shared how this practice, which she learned from her grandfather as a child, strengthened her to thrive in the midst of and ultimately conquer breast cancer at the age of 37. As one Hey Auntie member lovingly stated at the end of our conversation, “She is hope personified.”

So, as we enter this new month, I invite you to join me in reflecting on the power of gratitude in our own lives and then putting gratitude into action.

The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude is more than just a polite "thank you." It's an emotion that can enrich our lives in countless ways. By acknowledging the goodness in our lives, we empower ourselves and create a positive environment for growth. Gratitude allows us to focus on what we have rather than our lack. It is a healing balm for the soul, nurturing resilience and offering strength through life's ups and downs.

Gratitude in Action

Practicing gratitude can be as simple as keeping a gratitude journal, where we jot down things we are thankful for each day. Or perhaps you can actively seek out the positive aspects of your life to experience how it opens the door to new joy and satisfaction. Gratitude can also be expressed through acts of kindness, supporting and uplifting one another, and participating in community service.
